Race Report: Blue and Green 5k

In this race report, I'll be reviewing the Blue and Green 5k, which benefits New England Donor Services. Participants can walk or run the race distance.

Race bib 2026

Date: 26 April, 2026

Town: Bloomfield, CT, USA

Distance: 5km

Conditions: At the start of the race, it was 42F overcast and breezy in 2026. It warmed up as the sun fought its way through clouds over the course of the race.

Parking: Participants who wanted to "leave early" were directed to park at a local magnet school. This parking lot was overrun, while other nearby parking lots were nearly empty. I wish there had been volunteers on hand directing us to those other lots. It's unclear as to whether people in those lots were not permitted to leave until a certain time. There was also a parking lot designated only for Team Captains. More on that in a moment.

Check In: Registrants who opted to join a team were required to retrieve their bib and swag from their Team Captain. I cannot emphasize how inconvenient this is for runners who are part of a large club, as we don't all know each other and it's difficult to coordinate bib pickup. Thankfully, I did know my team captain (who was never once named in any of the pre-race emails) and she had my bib and tee shirt for me. I reached out to organizers 3 days before the race to determine whether I was registered for a team, and never heard back. The team name was never mentioned in any communications, but apparently I had selected my very large running club team when I registered.

Runners who registered solo were able to pick up their bib and shirt from the check-in tent.

Course Description: The out-and-back course was well-marshalled and far from scenic. It started and ended in a parking lot, which was part of a large corporate office area in Bloomfield. The course ran along the main roads of this area past a variety of office buildings. It was largely flat overall with just a few rises.

Afterparty: There was a great DJ for this event, with speakers set up at the start/finish and a quarter mile up the road. Upbeat music kept spirits high. There were a variety of refreshments, including giant muffins from a warehouse club, granola bars, Cheez-It crackers, and fruit. There were a number of sponsor tents that were handing out candy, reusable bags, and other swag.
