Race Report: Four on the Fourth

Four on the Fourth is a pretty common naming convention for races held on the Fourth of July, but this is my race report for the race held annually in New Canaan, CT. There is a similarly-named race in Chester, which I ran in 2024.

Course Map

Date:
 4 July, 2025

Town: New Canaan, CT, USA

Distance: 4 miles

Conditions: It was a surprisingly cool morning for this race, helped out by the early start time of 8am. It was very humid out, though, and I was feeling it by the time the race ended. It started out at 69F and it was 78F by the time I crossed the finish line. It was mostly sunny, also, and I found myself taking advantage of any and all patches of shade along the route.

Parking: Parking was sufficient - the race is hosted by St. Mark's Episcopal Church and uses their parking lot. The parking lot there is tiered so there was some maneuvering to do when it was time to leave.

Check In: Checking in was a fast, smooth process held outside of the church. Volunteers were stationed at a small table by a stone wall near the church door.

Course Description: This road race was an out-and-back course with gently rolling hills. The two miles out were net downhill, which meant that the final two miles were net uphill. The course went through residential neighborhoods with several road crossings, all of which were supported by police or volunteers. There was good community support for the race and people were waving from their homes. The roads were open to car traffic but motorists drove safely through the race route.

The finish line is technically across the street at a nature center and not at the church, which made leaving easier.

Afterparty: There was music playing at the nature center where the race ended, and several snacks and refreshments were available. There were (melted) popsicles, oranges, and an assortment of drink pouches as well as bottles of water.
