One weekend, two races. Today, I am recapping the Lobster Loop 5k. The name of the race was perplexing to me, in part because Canton's lobster festival was held the weekend prior to the race. Canton is also located well inland and not within a seafaring town known for its lobster trade. Another runner told me that there used to be a lobster dinner available after the race, but that budget cuts over the years eliminated the meal.
Course Map
Date: 24 August, 2025
Town: Canton, CT, USA
Distance: 5km
Conditions: It was another cool morning for a road race in August, and partly sunny when we started out. The humidity did climb throughout the race and the sky clouded up and looked like it might rain, but it did not. It was 64F for the 2025 race with a light breeze throughout most of the run.
Parking: Parking could be found near the start line, which was on a small green, in various shopping plazas. I parked a 1/4 mile away and jogged to the start line as a warm-up.
Check In: Checking in was a fast, smooth process. I did not have time to go back to my car after check-in so I decided not to take one of the lobster-themed tech shirts.
Course Description: This road race was a lollipop-shaped course with rolling hills. There was one steep uphill right before the end of the second mile, followed by a long downhill. There were water stops every mile. The course went through residential neighborhoods with several road crossings, all of which were supported by police or other town employees. There were a few spectators cheering on the runners, including one informal water stop. Roads appeared to be closed to traffic.
Afterparty: There was quite a crowd gathered at the finish line, with volunteers handing out freeze pops and bottles of water. I saw a table across the green with bananas but I was not sure whether it was some kind of fundraiser.
