Travelogue: Prepping for a Train Journey

With our car-buying drama behind us, my spouse and I are turning our attention to our upcoming vacation. In November 2025, we will be embarking on a train journey through Intrepid Travel. This is the first time we will be traveling with this company; normally, we plan our own trips from soup to nuts. But this past February, I saw that Intrepid was running a sale on a number of their trips and we decided to take advantage of the special pricing.

Before leaving on the trip, we have had to make some preliminary purchases. I'll tally those up here, then account for each day of our trip to see how much we will have spent.

First, we purchased the trip from Intrepid travel. The itinerary we selected was Berlin to Budapest, which includes 7 nights of accommodation, the train tickets between the 5 cities along the route, an orientation walking tour in each city, and several breakfasts. This sounded like a great deal to me, and it removed the need to purchase a volley of train tickets.

Total Accommodation and Train Tickets: $2,71.50 for two people

We also bought travel insurance from Travel Insured International Their annual plan seemed like a great value, especially since we take multiple trips per year.

Travel Insurance: $188 for two people

We've also bought our airline tickets. We are flying from Boston, USA to Berlin, Germany with a layover in Frankfurt. To return home, we will fly from Budapest, Hungary to Boston, USA via London, UK. I'm not terribly happy with the prices we paid on these tickets, but there was little choice in the matter. There were not many options from Budapest to the USA, and we had to spend quite a bit to select our seats on the transatlantic flights.

Total for Plane Tickets: $2,432.58

I'll tally these expenses into a table and see what the total cost of the trip is for the two of us in November!
