Race Recap: Salisbury Beast

Today, I will be recapping the self-proclaimed toughest 5k in Connecticut: the Salisbury Beast.

Course Map

Date: 19 October, 2025

Town: Salisbury, CT, USA

Distance: 5km

Conditions: It was a sunny, cool morning. It was 54F when the race began but conditions had warmed up considerably by the end of the race. Much of the course was in shade so it did feel cool.

Parking: There was limited parking behind town buildings and on-street parking in the center of town near the start line.

I parked near this goat pen near town hall.

Check In: This process was very quick, as the field of runners was small.

Course Description: This was a beautiful, brutal course straight uphill and straight back down. The course gained about 600 feet in elevation in the first half, passing by cow pastures and wooded areas. There were beautiful views of the surrounding Litchfield Hills. There were a few flat sections on the way up, but I admit to walking (briskly) the entire way.

There was a water stop at the turnaround that also offered little cups of Powerade. The way back down was much faster.

Afterparty: Offerings were pretty sparse. There was a raffle to raise money for the local ski patrol and the prizes looked very good (ski pass, etc). The organizers ran out of age group prizes - not that I won a prize, but I think it's strange to run out of prizes when you know ahead of time how many you will be distributing. There was more water, and Powerade, but they totally ran out of snacks. There were bananas cut into thirds, which I refused out of principle.
