Race Report: Run with the Animals @ Action Wildlife

I've been looking forward to this race for ages. The annual Run with the Animals @ Action Wildlife is takes place at a unique zoo in Goshen, CT. Action Wildlife is a non-profit organization that supports a natural history museum, a petting zoo, and a safari experience.

Date: 17 May, 2026

Town: Goshen, CT, USA

Distance: 5k (the course was short about 100m, by my watch)

Conditions: In 2026, it was sunny without a cloud in the sky and stayed that way for the duration of the race. It was 77°F (25°C) at the start of the race with very little wind.

Parking: There was plenty of parking in a gravel lot. It was easy to get out with no need for marshalling, though there were signs and cones to direct drivers.

Check In: Bib pickup took place in a pavilion around the side of the museum building. There was a brief line that moved quickly. All items (bib, information sheet, and cotton tee shirt) were packaged neatly into a bag for each participant, which made the process very speedy.

Course Description: The gravel course meandered around the Action Wildfire grounds, serving up views of all of the outdoor animal enclosures. Many folks stopped and took selfies with the animals. I definitely took the time to walk up several of the hills next to enclosures to take a better look at the animals.

The second and third miles of the race served up more hills than the first. The second mile also takes runners through the "safari loop" around the back of the property, where yaks and emus can be admired. I was taking advantage of the limited shade to take my hat off and cool down, so I didn't snag any photos.

The race does end on a steep uphill into a chute, which was unfortunate. The asphalt gravel was giving off a lot of heat even though the air temperature was not extremely high; it was quite sunny.

Afterparty: There were limited refreshments after the race. There were jugs of water, some halved bananas, and orange slices. I heard an announcement that there would be concessions sales, but I didn't see any other participants with any food or drink other than what I described so I'm not sure if the concessions stand opened up. Runners were allowed back out onto the course for a second look at the animals.
